Bill Gates predicts that most meetings will move to the Metaverse within 3 years!
The CEO and co-founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates, has predicted that most meetings will move to the Metaverse within 3 years. According to his blog Gates Notes, he said that within the next two or three years, most virtual meetings will move from 2D camera image grids, which he calls the Hollywood Squares model to the metaverse, a 3D space with digital avatars.
He acknowledged that both Facebook and Microsoft recently unveiled their visions for the metaverse. However, for the full experience, users still need some sort of VR goggles and motion capture gloves, to better capture expressions, body language, and voice quality.
For now PCs and phones will continue to be primary devices for this type of communication. He also mentioned that Microsoft plans to roll out an interim version next year, which uses a webcam to animate an avatar that’s used in the current 2D set-up.
He also sees the education potential for the digital transformation, and how it can be used to bring students and teachers together, from all over the world in one place.
Although he mentions that the pandemic has accelerated the adoption, the access to technology and fast internet is not available to many students, which may slow down the process. The intention is that these new tools will supplement classroom learning rather than replace it.
Facebook Launches Horizon Worlds
Facebook has announced that it is opening up its virtual reality world of avatars, called Horizon Worlds, in the U.S. and Canada.
Users will no longer need invites to sign up for Horizon Worlds. The key component is to offer a creator friendly VR space to create their virtual worlds.
Facebook also announced a $10 million Creator Fund in October to support the creators, and debuted a team-based, 3v3 laser tag , called Arena Clash.
Creators can now modify working scripts to create their own games for the community to play.
Nike Acquires RFTK, Digital NFT And Sneakers Producer
Another interesting development. Nike just acquired a virtual shoe firm, RFTK, which produces NFTs and sneakers for the metaverse. According to John Donahoe, President and CEO of NIKE, this acquisition will assist Nike to accelerate its digital transformation to serve athletes and creators at the intersection of sport, gaming and culture. The terms of the deal will not be disclosed.
